An initiative is the process by which citizens propose legislation or constitutional amendments through the petition process followed by a popular vote.
It is one of the several types of elections, together with primaries, general elections, and referendum. This procedure allows voters to submit a proposed law to a popular vote by obtaining a required number of signatures.
