Is this it?  We seem to need an additional fact.    Let's assume B is between A and C so AC=AB+BC.

x = x + 4 + 3x - 8

x = 4x - 4

4 = 3x

x = 4/3

Check:

4/3 + 4 + 3(4/3) - 8 = 16/3 - 4 = 4/3, good

Since AC=x our answer is

Answer: 4/3
