a. You have to just add up the ingredients to find the total cups of ingredients.

So...

1 1/2 + 3/4 + 1/8 = 1 4/8 + 6/8 + 1/8 = 1 11/8 = 2 3/8

b. You can use 3 or 4 cup mixing bowls because their capacity is more than the total cups of ingredients.
