The United States is a democratic republic because people are independent. It stands because people elect elected officials by free and secret ballot. It is a republic because the Government gets its power from the people.

What is the difference between republicanism & democracy?

In a pure democracy, laws are enacted by a majority of voters leaving the rights of very few people unprotected.

In a republic, laws are made by elected representatives of the people and must be in line with the constitution which directly protects the rights of minorities in a democracy.
