a steel ruler I prefer as the markings on a steel ruler doesn't gets erased off but of a plastic ruler it erases on the other hand the steel ruler can even hurt anyone if not used properly as it is very sharp whereas a plastic ruler doesn't and moreover a steel ruler doesn't breaks easily but a plastic ruler does...
