Answer: usually it’s by choice but it can also be by cultural background and even social norms someone could pick it based on many things but I would say it’s by choice

Most of the time, instruments are chosen by choice and/or by a group of instruments.

I'm a percussionist, ours were put into groups and we basically just got assigned while some were chosen by choice.
