A connotation is an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
So if we need a connotation for blue. Blue might be a color but it's also a word for describing the emotion sad as in "Shes feeling blue" connotations can either be positive or negative, or neutral. So a connotation for blue could be sad.
