On January 29, 1919, Congress ratified the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution, effectively banning the manufacture, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquors. The law, which ushered in the era known as Prohibition, went into effect one year later. Although the amendment occurred at the federal level, as of the time Prohibition legally went into effect, 33 states had already enacted their own prohibition laws
